What is “American food”? Except for Thanksgiving turkey, it is hard to find a typically American food. To many people, typical American food is hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken and pizza. In restaurants, you can easily find hamburger, steak, ribs with a little rice and a piece of bread, because their live style are so fast.

Americans living at a fast pace often just “grab a quick bite” when they are choosing their favorite American food. That is why fast food is very popular and available all over the USA. In fact, there are a wide variety of fast food restaurants serving all sorts of fast food from American style hamburgers, hot dogs and fried chicken to Italian pizza, Mexican tacos, Greek Gyros and Chinese egg rolls. Some of the fast food can be quite delicious; what is more, it is always inexpensive. Frankly speaking, it is no deny that these fast food restaurant chains may lack interesting variety, but you can usually be assured of good service, consistent quality and clean facilities. In many people’s eyes, fast food is all but American food.

It’s true that Americans do eat those things. However, these are not the only kind of vittles you can find in the list of American food. In some cases, Americans have adopted foods from other countries as favorites. As we know, the United States is a land of immigrants. When people move to America, they bring their cooking styles with them. That’s why you can find almost every kind of ethnic food in America. Americans love Italian pizza, Mexican tacos and Chinese egg rolls. And then there is truly American food, invented on U.S. ground by Americans, like Toll House cookies, corn dogs, cornbread, doughnuts, potato chips, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Each country has its own local food in different regions throughout the whole nation, so is America. The U.S.A has several distinct regions. Each region boasts its own special style of American food. Regional American food varies from state to state and is highly influenced by the types of ingredients locally available, as well as the cultural background of the people that settled in the area. If you visit the South, you will for sure enjoy the country-style cooking. And if you take a trip to New England, you will sample savory seafood dishes. Traveling through the Midwest, the breadbasket of the nation, you will have a taste for delicious baked goods.

Like Americans who is not willing to stay behind, American food is also trying to follow the fashion. For many Americans, the good taste is no longer the only thing they want to pursue at the time of choosing food. “You are what you eat.” Nutrition experts often use this saying to promote better eating habits. Nowadays, healthy American food is very popular in the USA. Everyone seems to be dieting and trying to lose weight. As a result, American food will be healthier in the future.
